Title project idea: NaviKiel: Spatial Orientation and Navigation of Senior Citizens and People with Disabilities in Urban Surroundings

As a psychologist and neuroscientist, I am particularly interested in our memory and its corresponding brain structures. In my current projects I am investigating how memory is consolidated during sleep, and what impairments occur in aging and neurodegeneration such as Alzheimer's disease.

In both healthy and abnormal aging processes not only memory but also spatial orientation decreases.

My interest in "Urban Design" relates to the elderly's ability to participate in urban space. The trend towards urbanization goes hand in hand with the demographic change towards an aging society. For this reason it is of growing importance to include age-appropriate spatial orientation facilities in the planning of cities. Together with DenkRaum Fellows from other disciplines, I would like to pursue questions related to this, and help to ensure that older and disabled people can be autonomous in our cities for as many years as possible.
